How we work
A garden has three dimensions, not two.
Six years on Hout Bay gardens. One idea behind every visit.
Cut for the shape, not the outline.
Lawn is flat. A garden is not. We cut and prune for depth, volume and how light moves through — and for how the form will hold in three years' time. A hedge clipper trims an outline; a gardener works a shape.
Read what was planted.
Every established garden was planted with an intention — colour against that wall, height at that corner, scent at the doorway. Before we cut, we read what was meant. Then we work towards it.
Botanical or natural. Both, done well.
Some gardens want clipped hedges and clean edges. Others want fynbos finding its own shape, restios bending in the wind. Both are good gardens. We don't force one onto the other.
Restoration, not upkeep.
Most gardens we inherit have drifted — overgrown in places, over-pruned in others, quietly let go over the years. The first season is restoring. The years after are keeping it there.
