Gutter cleaning across the Atlantic Seaboard & Southern Suburbs.
Gutters and downpipes cleared by hand, flushed through and checked, with the debris bagged and taken away. Best done before the winter rains, and easily added to a garden visit.
Timing matters more here than most places.
Cape Town takes its rain in winter. That single fact decides when gutters should be cleaned. A gutter that is packed with pine needles in April is not a small problem you get to later, it is a blocked gutter through every storm from May to August. Water backs up under the roof sheet, runs down the wall instead of the downpipe, and finds the fascia board, the ceiling or the paintwork.
So the window is autumn, March or April, before the first real front comes through. If you have pines, oaks or milkwoods over the roof, a second clear after the summer southeaster has finished throwing debris around is worth doing.
What a clear covers.
- Gutters cleared by hand along their full run
- Downpipes checked and cleared, and flushed through to prove they run
- Gutters flushed so you can see the water leave rather than assume it does
- Falls checked, so standing water gets noticed before it rusts a seam
- Brackets, joints and overflow points looked over
- Valleys and roof gullies cleared where they can be reached safely
- All debris bagged and removed from site
- A written note of anything we found, with photographs
The photographs matter for the roofs nobody ever sees. Most people have never looked into their own gutters, and a picture of a cracked joint is more use than being told about one.
Added to a garden visit.
If we already look after your garden, the easiest arrangement is to put the gutters on a scheduled visit in autumn. The team is on site anyway, the debris goes out with the green waste, and you do not have to remember it every year. Say the word once and it becomes part of the schedule.
You do not need a garden contract for it, though. Gutter cleaning stands on its own if that is all you need.
What's not included.
- Gutter repair, resealing or replacement (a separate trade, and we will tell you when you need one)
- Roof repairs, tile or sheet work, and waterproofing
- Roofs that need scaffolding or rope access to reach safely
- Fitting gutter guards or leaf screens
Pricing.
Quoted by property, after a free on-site assessment. A single storey house with a short run and no trees over it is not the same job as a double storey under pines, and a price given over the phone without seeing the roof would be a guess. We look, we quote in writing, and the quote holds. Nothing is charged for the assessment and there is nothing to sign.
Frequently asked.
When should gutters be cleaned in Cape Town?
Before the winter rains, so autumn. March or April is the sensible window. Cape Town gets its rain in winter, which means a gutter that is blocked in April stays blocked through every storm until spring. If you have pines or milkwoods over the roof, a second clear after the summer southeaster is worth doing.
Do I need to be a garden client?
No. Gutter cleaning is a service on its own. If we already do your garden it can ride on a scheduled visit, which is usually the easiest way to arrange it.
What happens to the debris?
It is bagged and taken away. It does not get raked off the roof into your beds and left there.
Do you repair or replace gutters?
No. We clear, flush and check. If a bracket has pulled loose, a joint is leaking or a section has rusted through, we photograph it and tell you, so you can get it dealt with before the rain finds it. Gutter replacement and roof work are separate trades and we do not pretend otherwise.
What if the roof is difficult to reach?
We work from ladders where there is safe footing and safe access. If a roof needs scaffolding or rope access we say so at the assessment rather than take a chance on it. Nobody's gutters are worth an injury.
Related services.
Gutters are usually done alongside garden maintenance, on a scheduled autumn visit. Owners who are out of the country have the gutters, the garden and everything else handled under home management, with photographs each month so they can see the roof was actually cleared.
